The INWTC Takeover

It's no secret that Brian Owen and INWTC have had great success in North Dakota, while last year the club left with three champions, two of them coming from Miro Parr-Coffin. INWTC left Fargo this year with seven stop signs across both divisions, headlined by a title from Austin Shield. Coach Owen is no stranger to Fargo greatness himself, having finished second in freestyle and third in Greco-Roman at the 2007 junior national tournament — experience he's now passing on to both his club and Team Washington.

16U Results

Austin Shield, 1st at 138lbs. After a runner-up finish in the freestyle division, Shield earned his first Fargo title, cruising to the finals with five technical falls. The Gunslinger took home gold with an 8-3 victory over Wisconsin, sporting the same cowboy hat he left the Tacoma Dome with last February.

Ryder Owen, 4th at 132lbs. The former Fargo champ added another stop sign to his wall, winning his first five bouts — one by fall in just 16 seconds, the fourth-fastest of the session — before falling to the eventual Illinois champion in the quarterfinals. Owen finished fourth, tacking on another All-American nod for the Owen family.

Elijah Jensen, 4th at 88lbs. Secured double All-American status after winning his first two matches by fall and technical fall. He fell in the quarters to the eventual runner-up, then battled back to the third-place bout, where he lost on criteria to Nevada.

Miro Parr-Coffin, 5th at 106lbs. Returning to Fargo after a double-champ season a year ago, he grabbed his third stop sign in two years. He opened with three straight technical falls before falling in the quarterfinals to Illinois, then fought back to the fifth-place match and avenged that loss with a 6-1 win.

Arcadius Cruz, 5th at 126lbs. The Orting native opened with four straight victories before falling in the quarterfinals. The 2A state champion fought through the backside of the bracket to earn All-American honors, placing fifth by medical forfeit in his placement match.

Duane Leslie, 6th at 190lbs. After a runner-up finish in freestyle, Leslie earned his third stop sign, winning his first four bouts with three technical falls and a pin. An injury forced him to medically forfeit out of the tournament in the semifinals, closing his run at sixth overall.

Junior Results

Kade West, 3rd at 285lbs. The big man from Anacortes stood alone as Washington's Junior double All-American. West dropped his second bout of the tournament to California, but that was far from the end of the story — he ripped off eight straight wins on the backside of the bracket to keep his double All-American bid alive, closing it out with a 5-0 win over Illinois in the third-place match. One of the best comeback runs of the week for Washington.

Tre Haines, 3rd at 165lbs. The Little Rock commit turned in yet another All-American campaign. The Fargo veteran won his first five bouts — three by technical fall, two by decision — before falling to Ohio in the semifinals. He closed out his final trip to the Fargo dome with two nail-biting wins for a third-place finish.

Mason DesRochers, 6th at 144lbs. The three-time state champion grabbed his first stop sign after opening with three straight technical falls. He fell to Minnesota in the quarterfinals, then won back-to-back bouts — including a 20-17 grudge match against Alabama — to finish sixth at 144lbs.

Logan Wray, 8th at 100lbs. The Tahoma Bear earned his first Fargo placement, opening with a technical-fall win before falling in the quarters and dropping the eighth-place match to Indiana.

Lazarus McEwen, 8th at 120lbs. The two-time Washington state champion earned All-American status by winning his first two matches by technical fall. After a Round-of-16 loss, he reeled off three straight wins before falling in the consolation sub-semifinals, finishing eighth in a loaded bracket.

Team Washington's boys head home after another successful trip to Fargo, tallying 18 All-Americans across the freestyle and Greco-Roman divisions. Now the Lady Apples take the stage, with the 16U and Junior Women's tournament kicking off Thursday, July 16th.
